Music is taught with the aim of exposing the children to a wide variety of styles, genres and musical traditions. Musical experiences allow our children to develop as learners and there is a focus on promoting a love and curiosity of music, which the children build on throughout the key stage.
The delivery of music at Rednal Hill Junior School utilises a range of resources to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum programme of study. Music lessons are blocked in years 3, 5 and 6 and run over half an academic year. Year 4 has music taught by Birmingham’s music service and runs over the whole of an academic year. The sessions follow a specific theme or genre of music, allowing the children to build on the previous lesson to ensure clarity and understanding of the skills and knowledge learned. These are revisited regularly across KS2, and the skills and knowledge learnt are then built on year by year to maximise learning for all our children. Children are expected to use the correct musical vocabulary and are given opportunities to widen their range and understanding of musical styles and genres. Time is regularly dedicated to all aspects of music, listening and appraising music, performing and evaluating, composition using a wide range of both percussion and tuned instruments, as well as learning to play an instrument and singing as part of an ensemble, throughout school life. The different elements of music are taught in the classroom lessons as well as during wider school activities. This allows the children to develop as musicians and singers and follows our whole school vision, which aims to enable all children, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.
As music is predominantly practically based, photographs and videos are used to document the learning journey. At the end of each topic the children are asked reflect on how well they feel their learning has progressed, including their enjoyment of the topic. Along with teacher assessment, this is used to adapt and develop the provision and delivery of music lessons to ensure that the children continue to enjoy music lessons and their attainment across the key stage continues to build good knowledge and skills.
