Aims of the PE curriculum at Rednal Hill Junior School:

At RHJS, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long-term, healthy lifestyles. Our bespoke PE curriculum aims to:

  • Provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision.
  • Ensure that every pupil succeeds and achieves their potential
  • Encourage pupils to lead physically active lifestyles and appreciate the benefits of healthy living
  • Inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all.
  • Provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as resilience, perseverance, integrity and responsibility.
  • Ensure pupils are involved in physical activity which encourages communicating, collaborating and competing with each other

Delivery of the PE curriculum at Rednal Hill Junior School:

Here at Rednal Hill Junior School, we have a carefully mapped out and sequenced PE curriculum which ensures that pupils are exposed to a wide range of sporting and physical activities. Our PE disciplines are as follows:

We have selected PE focuses in order to teach the disciplines. These focuses have been selected to inspire and interest the pupils and to ensure that they are exposed to broad and varied sporting activities which encompass a wide variety of skills.

In Year 3 and 5, all children receive swimming tuition every academic year. Children who do not achieve the required standard in swimming in Year 3 and 5 will have a further opportunity in Year 6.

Pupils will receive 2 PE lessons each week – one delivered by their class teacher and one delivered by a sports coach. Teachers are responsible for teaching the following disciplines:  striking and fielding, dance, gymnastics and OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities). In year 4 and 6, class teachers deliver hockey.  A specialist sports coach teaches the following disciplines: invasion, net and wall and athletics.

We have decided to structure our delivery and lessons like this to ensure children receive a consistent approach to the discipline as they progress up the school and we strive to make our staff confident and experts in their discipline in order to deliver high-quality lessons.

All units of work have carefully sequenced lessons that build progressively so that pupils are given the best opportunity to reach their full potential. Each lesson follows the same structure which is:

Through their PE sessions, pupils are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson is sequenced so that it builds on previous skills, allowing them time to embed it.

A skills progression document for each PE focus outlines the expectations for pupils in different year groups and supports teachers in delivering appropriately pitched lessons.

Pupils are encouraged to communicate during PE lessons and there is a high expectation of the vocabulary and terminology used both by adults and pupils. A progressive vocabulary document supports teachers in selecting the vocabulary to use and teach within the PE lessons.

Pupils, during lessons, are encouraged to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own and other peoples’ successes.

The 3 pillars of development are embedded into our curriculum and every unit and every lesson will encompass:

  • Motor competency
  • Rules, strategies and tactics
  • Healthy participation

Here at Rednal Hill, we have 4 core principles that run through our PE curriculum which are taught, recognised and celebrated as part of PE lessons which aim to develop a growth mindset and promote the notion of sportsmanship. These are:

  • Resilience
  • Perseverance
  • Integrity
  • Responsibility

Our School Houses have been named after 4 sporting icons who are role models for the core principles. They are:

  • Ali
  • Simmonds
  • Bolt
  • Radacanu

Children are rewarded in school with house points across all subjects when they display these core principles.

Enrichment Opportunities

Every term, a new programme of before and after school sports provision is devised for pupils to express an interest in. These activities are carefully selected and aim to either strengthen an existing sporting focus being taught in school or offer alternative sporting activities to widen the opportunities that pupils are given.

Inter house competitions and fixtures against other schools are organised throughout the year as we believe that this provides a real-life situation for them to display the 4 core principles and allows them the opportunity to experience competitive sport.

A yearly sports day is held in the summer term which allows pupils of all abilities to contribute to their houses. This day is a celebration of physical activity, competition and is high inclusive of all pupils.

PE lessons at Rednal Hill Junior School:

In Year 3, the children have been learning the discipline Net and Wall, with the focus on badminton. In their lessons, the children have learnt the skills required to play badminton. In one activity, the children played shuttle Golf, each group had a turn at aiming their shuttlecock at different distances. They had to hit the shuttle into the hoop within the number of shots they were allowed for that distance. Children have learnt the correct hand positions to hold the badminton racket and the correct standing positions when playing badminton. Here are some images to show what the children have been doing in their lessons.

In Year 5, the children have been learning the discipline Net and Wall, with the focus on badminton. In their lessons, the children have been playing single badminton games. Throughout the singles matches, the children were applying court position techniques into their game play.  The children have learnt to umpire their own games and apply the rules and skills to improve their own technique and the technique of their peers.

Year 5 have also been learning the discipline striking and fielding, with the focus on cricket. In their lessons, they have been building their skills as fielders - following the path of the ball and always being ready to catch the ball. The children have thought about the strategies of the game cricket and thought about the best position to be in as a fielder to be ready to catch the ball. They have learnt the rules of cricket and have practiced applying them into their game play. The children have developed their batting technique and thought about the strategies that can be used in batting to outwit the fielders.
